As I was born in Iran and left when I was 6 months old due to political reasons, I understand the plight of refugees and what they face. When I hear about their stories and the struggles they have endured, it reminds me of how difficult life must have been for my parents and myself and reaffirms that you must have a fighting spirit and try to ensure that the rights of others are not violated. It is an indication that there is a serious problem from which refugees are fleeing as no person would voluntarily want to leave their homeland in search of a foreign land in which they will automatically feel as an outsider and face a different type of isolation. It reminds me that I was once a refugee fleeing from a dictatorial regime, and that I must appreciate my rights and civil liberties. When the government of the day deprives you of your rights, you know how it feels to have no status. Once you are granted these rights in a new country, it is difficult not to remember that you have left people behind in your previous homeland who are deprived of their basic fundamental rights. This is an underlying factor which motivates me to continue working to help create change for the people of Iran so that their rights will be someday restored to them when peace exists and democracy prevails.
