Bio

The war that raged for two decades in Sudan forced me out of the country at the age of three. I trekked with my father for almost two months without food and little water to seek safety in a refugee camp in the neighboring Ethiopia. After four years in a refugee camp at Panyido, I was forced to flee again during the Ethiopian civil war, this time back into Sudan. Under heavy gun fire, refugees fled in chaos with some drowning while crossing the river near the border while were others killed by wild animals during their perilous journey.

In 1992, continuing war in Sudan forced me to take another dangerous trek, but this time I found the relative safety of the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. Separated from my family, I lived there for 13 years before getting the change to resettle to Australia in 2004 through my cousin who sent me a proposal form. Ambitious and motivated by the opportunities I saw in Australia, I worked hard to settle and integrate into the mainstream community. For the last three years, I worked as a youth worker with number of organizations, the Brotherhood of St Lawrence, the Southern Ethnic Advisory & Advocacy Council and the Centre for Multicultural Youth. I now call Melbourne home and finishing up an Arts degree from Melbourne University.
